What to actually register for

Most registries are built for the baby. The things that get used most are for the mother and the first six weeks.

What it is

Baby registry essentials. What you do not need. A registry for the mother. Most registries are long lists of baby gear, much of it never used. What matters most in the first weeks is not cute: pads, a water bottle, food, and help.

What's typical

Used daily: a safe sleep space, a car seat, diapers and wipes, a carrier, burp cloths, simple clothes. Rarely used: wipe warmers, shoes, nursery decor. Many mothers say they wish they had registered for postpartum supplies, meals, and doula hours. Most big registries now allow cash funds and services.

What's known

The AAP and the Consumer Product Safety Commission advise against inclined sleepers, crib bumpers, and loose bedding. A car seat and a flat sleep surface are the two items with safety rules. Everything else is preference.

What helps

  • Register for the mother first: pads, a peri bottle, nursing bras, a water bottle with a straw, a robe.
  • Add a meal fund, a house cleaning, or postpartum doula hours. Friends want to give something real.
  • Ask a friend with a one-year-old what she used every day. Register for that.

When to call someone

  • Nowif a baby product fails and the baby is hurt, call 911. Report the product to the CPSC later.
  • Todayif you were given an inclined sleeper, a crib bumper, or a used car seat with no history, set it aside and ask your pediatrician.
  • At your next visitask which postpartum supplies to have ready for your type of birth.
