What it is
Flying with a newborn. Thanksgiving with a newborn. A wedding with a baby. Events land in the first months whether you are ready or not. Two questions come up: is it safe for the baby, and is it good for you. The answers are often 'mostly' and 'not yet.'
What's typical
Most airlines allow babies from about two weeks old. Many pediatricians prefer to wait until after the two-month shots for flights and big gatherings. Newborns often sleep through flights. A one-hour holiday visit with a plan to leave is more common than a full day.
What's known
The AAP advises limiting crowds and sick contacts in the first two months, and a car seat on planes rather than a lap. The CDC advises that anyone holding the baby be current on Tdap and flu shots. Your own recovery and clot risk are the bigger reasons to wait.
What helps
- Decide the exit before you arrive. 'We will stay until the first nap, then go.'
- Bring the bassinet. Couches and beds full of coats are not sleep spaces.
- If it is within six weeks and you do not want to go, send a photo instead.
When to call someone
- Nowa baby under three months with a fever of 100.4 or higher. Go in. For you: chest pain, a swollen painful leg, or heavy bleeding after a long trip. Call 911.
- Todayif someone who held the baby turns out to be sick with flu, RSV, or whooping cough. Call the pediatrician.
- At your next visitask when flights and large gatherings are reasonable for your baby.
