What it is
Toddler regression after a new baby is common. A potty-trained two-year-old wets again. A good sleeper wakes. A sweet child hits. Two under two is its own kind of hard. The older child has lost their place and has no words for it.
What's typical
Regression and jealousy show up in the first weeks and often last two to three months. Many children ignore the baby, then get too rough, then settle into interest. Setbacks usually pass on their own. Hitting the baby is common and is about the child, not the baby.
What's known
The AAP describes regression as a normal response to change and advises patience over correction. Studies find that ten minutes of one-on-one time a day with the older child makes a real difference.
What helps
- Ten minutes a day of the older child's choosing, with no baby in your arms.
- Keep their routine as close to normal as you can. Same daycare, same bedtime.
- Give them a job: fetch the diaper, pick the song.
- Say the feeling for them. 'You wish the baby would go back.' Then hold them.
When to call someone
- Nowa baby who was hit or shaken and seems sleepy, limp, or vomits. Go in.
- Todaythe older child stops eating, has night terrors most nights, or hurts themselves.
- At your next visitregression past three months, or rage at the older child that scares you. Both have help.
