Pregnancy as a single parent

Being a solo mom, by choice or by chance, means building the team a partner would have been. The team is often better.

What it is

Pregnancy as a single parent covers the single mother by choice who planned every step, and the mother whose partner left, died, or was never there. Having no partner changes the logistics more than the pregnancy. Someone needs to be in the room at birth, drive you home, and cover a feed when you are sick.

What's typical

About 1 in 4 U.S. children lives with one parent. Solo mothers do best when they name their people early: a birth person, a first-week person, and two or three who can be called at night. Many get a doula. In California, Medi-Cal now covers doula care. Your leave is the same as any mother's: pregnancy disability leave, then paid family leave through the EDD.

What's known

Research finds a child's outcomes track with support and stability, not with the number of parents in the house. Single Mothers by Choice has run peer groups since 1981. Many cultures expect the mother's mother or sisters to move in for the first weeks, partner or not.

What helps

  • Write the list: who is at the birth, who drives, who is on call at night.
  • Ask a friend to set up the meal train.
  • Look for a solo-parent group before birth. Online counts.

When to call someone

  • Nowlabor signs or bleeding and no ride. Call 911; do not drive yourself.
  • Todayyou cannot cope and have no one to call. The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline is 1-833-852-6262.
  • At your next visitask about the Medi-Cal doula benefit and a social worker.
