What it is
Grief and newborn care sometimes land in the same month. You lost a parent after baby arrived. Mourning postpartum is strange because the world expects you to be happy. The loss often hits harder because the person you lost was supposed to be here for this.
What's typical
Grief in the first months comes in short, hard waves between feeds. It often surfaces later, around three to six months or at the first birthday. Grief and depression can look alike. Grief comes in waves and still lets you feel love. Depression is flat and does not.
What's known
Grief researchers describe mourning as moving between facing the loss and getting on with life. A newborn forces the back and forth. New mothers often delay grieving and need permission to do it.
