Grandparents and in-laws

Grandparents can be your best help or your hardest visitors. Here is how to use the first and handle the second.

What it is

The mother-in-law who rearranges your kitchen. The grandparents who insist babies slept on their stomachs just fine. Outdated advice from 1988 that is now known to be unsafe. This is a common source of postpartum tension, and it comes from love more often than not. In most of the world, the grandmother is the postpartum plan. The friction comes when her way and your provider's way do not match.

What's typical

Safe sleep, feeding, and holding are the usual flashpoints. Back sleeping, no blankets, and feeding on demand are all newer than most grandparents' experience. The first week is often the hardest. It settles once roles are clear. Grandparents given a real job tend to give less advice.

What's known

The AAP's safe sleep rules changed in 1992 and again in 2022. A grandparent's advice is often what was taught before that. Studies find grandparent care protects the mother's mood when roles are agreed on, and strains it when they are not.

What helps

  • Let the partner handle their own parents.
  • Give a real job: dishes, laundry, the older child, a daily walk with the stroller.
  • Share the pediatrician's handout on safe sleep. 'The doctor says' does a lot of work.
  • Set a visit length and a leave date before they arrive.

When to call someone

  • Nowa baby put to sleep on the stomach or with blankets who seems limp or is hard to wake. Call 911.
  • Todayif conflict at home is making you tearful or anxious most of the day.
  • At your next visitask for a safe sleep and feeding handout you can give to family.
