What it is
The non-birthing parent, whether father, partner, adoptive or foster parent, has two things in California. Paid Family Leave (PFL) from the EDD pays eight weeks of partial wages for bonding in the baby's first year. The California Family Rights Act (CFRA) protects the job for up to 12 weeks at employers with five or more, after a year and 1,250 hours there. PDL and SDI are for the person who gave birth only. Marriage is not required.
What's typical
Many partners take two to four weeks right after the birth, then save the rest for when the mother returns to work. PFL pays 70 to 90 percent of wages up to a cap; check the current EDD figures. Two parents at the same employer each get their own 12 weeks of CFRA.
What's known
Studies of paternity leave link it with more equal division of care a year later and with lower rates of maternal depression. The CRD handles denial of CFRA bonding leave to a father the same as to a mother.
What helps

- Plan the partner's leave around the hard weeks: the first two, and the mother's return to work.
When to call someone

- Todaya PFL claim denied or unpaid after three weeks.
- At your next visitno provider step is needed; ask your doula how other couples staged it.
