The deeper version

D-MER is a described phenomenon of transient dysphoria linked to the , reported mostly in mothers who are breastfeeding or pumping. Its mechanism is not established. Proposed explanations include dopaminergic and oxytocin-related changes at the time of let-down, though these remain hypotheses. Evidence is largely from patient reports, online surveys, and small clinical series, and it has not been validated as a diagnostic category in the major classification systems. Distinguishing D-MER from perinatal mood and anxiety disorders requires attention to duration, persistence, and other symptoms. Postpartum Support International describes the phenomenon in its perinatal mood information. The main open questions concern prevalence, mechanism, and whether any clinical intervention changes its course.
