Feeding twins or multiples

Feeding twins or more takes more hours, more help, and often a mix of breast, pump, and bottle. Your body can make milk for two.

What it is

You are feeding two babies, or more. You might be looking up 'tandem feeding,' a 'twin nursing pillow,' or 'pumping for twins.' Twins are born early more often, so many mothers start with pumping or tube feeds in the NICU. Supply works on demand. Two babies asking usually means milk for two.

What's typical

About 60 percent of twins are born before 37 weeks. Early feeding often means pumping eight or more times a day while the babies learn. Many mothers tandem feed, one baby on each side, which saves hours. Others nurse one and bottle-feed the other, then swap. Combo feeding with formula is common with multiples and is not a failure.

What's known

La Leche League describes full breastfeeding of twins as doable, with supply matching demand. Studies of triplets find partial breastfeeding is the norm. Help at home is the factor most studies name.

What helps

  • A firm twin nursing pillow, or two regular pillows, so your hands are free.
  • Football hold on both sides is the most common tandem position.
  • Keep a simple log: who ate, which side, how long. Your brain will not hold it.
  • Line up night help. Someone else can give one bottle while you feed the other.

When to call someone

  • Nowa baby who is limp, hard to wake, or breathing fast.
  • Todayone twin gaining much less than the other, or fewer wet diapers than expected.
  • At your next visita feeding plan for going home from the NICU, or help with tandem positions.
