What it is
Every few weeks, a baby who was settling turns clingy, feeds more, and sleeps worse. Many mothers meet this through the Wonder Weeks book and app, which say babies go through ten 'leaps' at set weeks. The idea has stuck because the fussy weeks are real. Growth spurts around two to three weeks, six weeks, and three months bring extra feeding and fussing. The four-month sleep regression is a true change: sleep moves into adult-like cycles, with more waking between them.
What's typical
A fussy phase lasts a few days to two weeks. The baby feeds more, wants to be held, and cries more easily. Then it lifts, and often a new skill shows up. The four-month change can last two to six weeks and does not fully reverse.
What's known
The Wonder Weeks claims rest on small studies by its authors. A later attempt to repeat them did not find leaps at fixed weeks. Researchers do agree that development comes in bursts. The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine describes growth-spurt feeding as a supply signal, not a shortage.
