What it is
Mood swings and weird dreams are two of the most common things mothers mention and then wave off as hormonal. Both are real. Progesterone and estrogen climb fast in the first trimester and shape mood and sleep. Pregnancy also wakes you more at night, and you remember dreams when you wake in the middle of one.
What's typical
Mood swings are strongest in weeks 6 to 10 and again in the last month. Crying at a commercial, snapping at a partner, and feeling fine ten minutes later all fit. Dreams get vivid and strange from the first trimester on. Common ones are forgetting the baby, giving birth to an animal, water, and falling. A dream says nothing about the baby or about you.
What's known
Sleep researchers tie dream recall to light sleep and night waking, both of which rise in pregnancy. March of Dimes and the NHS describe mood shifts as expected. The line to watch is time. A mood that drops and stays down for two weeks is not a swing. That is depression, and it is treatable.
