In plain words
Synaptic pruning is the brain's process of removing unused connections between nerve cells, so the connections in use work more efficiently. It is well documented in the teen years. Some researchers propose that hormones in pregnancy drive a similar reshaping of the brain, which is sometimes called brain pruning. The idea is that the brain becomes more specialized rather than less capable. This is a hypothesis. It fits some imaging and behavior data, but it has not been proven. It is often confused with memory loss, which is a separate concern. New or severe confusion is a reason to call a provider.
The deeper version
Synaptic pruning is activity-dependent elimination of excess synapses during adolescence and early adulthood, in which synapse number falls while circuit efficiency rises. Longitudinal MRI work has reported changes across pregnancy (Hoekzema and colleagues, Nature Neuroscience, 2017). The proposed mechanism is hormonally driven pruning analogous to adolescence, producing more specialized circuits. Whether these changes reflect pruning, rather than other remodeling or changes in blood flow, is not established, and functional consequences for daily cognition are unclear.
