scope of practice

Also: scope, professional scope

The set of tasks a trained professional is allowed to do, set by law, licensing, and training. A doula's scope excludes clinical tasks such as exams and medical advice.

In plain words

Scope of practice is the range of tasks a person is trained and permitted to perform in their role. For licensed clinicians, such as midwives, nurses, and physicians, the scope is set by state law and licensing boards. are not licensed clinicians in California, so their scope centers on continuous emotional, physical, and informational support. It does not include clinical tasks, such as vaginal examinations, , or giving medical advice. Lactation consultants, therapists, and other birth workers each have their own scope too. Knowing it helps a mother understand who can do what in her care. It also explains why a doula will refer a question about a symptom to a clinician rather than answer it. Scope can change with new laws and new training.

The deeper version

Scope of practice is the legally and professionally defined boundary of the activities a practitioner may perform. It is usually established by statute, regulatory board rules, credentialing, and institutional privileges. For licensed clinicians it determines whether an act is an independent function, a delegated task, or outside the role. Non-licensed birth workers, including doulas and some lactation providers, operate under an informal or certificate-based scope. That scope typically excludes vaginal examination, interpretation of fetal monitoring, diagnosis, prescribing, and treatment decisions. Disputes arise at the edges, for example when a advises on infant weight gain. Under California's doula benefit, administered by DHCS, the covered services are non-clinical support, which reflects this distinction.
