In plain words
The mastitis spectrum is a way of describing breast problems in a line, from mild to serious. sits at the mild end. A comes next. Inflammation without infection and follow. A breast abscess is at the serious end. Problems can move along the line if milk stays in the breast. The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine uses this framing. It affects many mothers, whatever their feeding plan. A fever, pus, or a patch that keeps growing is a sign to call your provider the same day.
The deeper version
The mastitis spectrum is the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine's (2022) term for a continuum of lactational : engorgement, milk stasis or plugged duct, non-infectious inflammatory mastitis, infectious mastitis, and breast abscess. Stasis and inflammation are the shared mechanisms, with infection added at later stages. Unrelieved engorgement can impair latch and in the early weeks, when supply is being established, which is why the protocol stresses early milk removal. The framing also reflects that most cases are benign and self-limited. The controversy concerns where non-infectious inflammation ends and infectious mastitis begins, since diagnosis is mostly clinical and cultures are rarely taken.
