What it is
A freezer stash is a bank of pumped milk kept for days you are apart, a return to work, or peace of mind. 'How long is milk good' has a short answer from the CDC: about 4 hours at room temperature, 4 days in the fridge, 6 months in a freezer. Thawed milk keeps 24 hours in the fridge. High lipase milk smells soapy after storage, from an enzyme that breaks down fat. It is safe, but some babies refuse it.
What's typical
Most mothers do not need a large stash. For full-time work, a day's worth plus a few extra ounces is enough. Freeze in small amounts, 2 to 4 ounces, flat, labeled with the date. Thaw overnight in the fridge or in warm water, never the microwave. Swirl, do not shake.
What's known
The CDC and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine publish the storage times most hospitals use. Freezing lowers some antibodies a little; frozen milk is still milk. Scalding fresh milk before freezing stops the lipase change for many mothers.
What helps
- Add one pump session a day after the morning feed, from about 3 to 4 weeks. Do not chase a number.
- Label every bag with date and ounces. Store flat, then file upright in a bin.
- Test one bag after a week in the freezer. If it smells soapy and the baby refuses, scald future milk first.
When to call someone
- Todaythe baby is sick or vomiting after a bottle of stored milk.
- At your next visitthe baby refuses all thawed milk.
